OPTIMISM CAN TAKE YOU ANYWHERE!
Four and a half years ago, I was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease. The virtual body slam! I went through all the emotions: This can't be happening to me; it's not fair; I have too much yet to do; I am at the top of my career, etc.... But "Stuff Happens," or as I learned first hand: “Man plans, God smiles."
Some people swim the English Channel or bike across the USA to showcase their cause.
The Optimism Can Take You Anywhere campaign continues!! During the first leg of our tour we raised almost $60,000 (40% of our goal of $150,000) and are very excited to begin the next leg come October 5th. Please note 100% of all donations, ALL OF IT, goes towards Parkinson's research through the American Parkinson's Disease Association. This organization has been working to "ease the burden and find a cure" for the past 50 years.
The first leg of our Odyssey included visits to Bar Harbor, Schoodic Peninsula & Penobscot Bay, all in Maine, & then South to Portsmouth, Boston and Nantucket, just to name a few.
A few of the first stops when we begin leg two of the tour are Long Island, followed by NYC and the Chesapeake Bay - and I can't wait! I'm having the time of my life living out the number one thing on my bucket list as my symptoms remain stable.
For those who are less familiar with PD, it's a neurodegenerative disorder that results in the loss of motor control. Many of you might associate PD with a shaky hand or leg but there are others including rigidity, dyskinesia, cognitive effects, and a dozen more. Not to mention side effects caused by the medications. I believe we are so very, very close to finding a cure. In the meantime, I am doing everything I possibly can to help fund a cure and to set an example - how to not only live with a chronic illness but thrive. LIFE IS WHAT IT IS, AND IT WILL BECOME WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT! There is a sticker above the engine compartment on the boat that says it all: "Powered By Optimism!"
This journey continues to be an incredible experience for me and I would like to thank everyone for their enthusiastic support of my efforts - best displayed in the many calls, letters and emails offering encouragement and assisting me in funding a cure. Now I am outward bound, heading south on a 2,500 nautical mile leg and I'll be damned if I'll let PD define or control me. So, with a nod offering to Poseidon as I aim the boat south, it is with the firm belief that:
If you don't live life a little on the edge, you're taking up too much room!
